I made two trips to Australia in the early 70's. The first was March of 1971 for 5 months and the second was October 1972 for 2 years. The first trip I landed in Sydney, NSW. We bought a car and traveled North to Coolangatta, Queensland. My second trip I called Byron Bay, NSW my home. I surfed most of the surf spots between Angourie, NSW and Noosa, QLD. Fourty-three ago Byron Bay is not the same community that exists today, The back to nature laid back life style was the popular way to live outside the big cities.

Excellent Read. A memoir of surfing by Californians in Byron Bay, Australia...in the early 1970's. Funny stories of adventures in the water and on land...beautifully told in the first person. For surfers and non-surfers alike...here is the mindset of an era of freedom and the spirit of adventure found on the other side of the world...of hospitality, friendship, and the unsurpassed natural beauty of the ocean.

I recommend this book highly...and yes...written by my older brother Brian.

It Time for Byron Brian Jahn 9780692879931 Books Reviews

Brian Jahn recounts his life as a surfer on his sojourn in Australia. Not only does he write in a free-flowing natural style, its like I am there listening to him tell his stories. You don't have to be a surfer to enjoy this book or to relate and laugh at his experiences, it's just a good well-written tale. I loved it.
The story of the trip us groms all wanted to take in the late 1960's from California to Australia but were too young, or too scared, to make the trip.

Brain takes us with him on his adventures and some of the lessons learned. In the Aussie surf culture of the day he appreciated good friends (i.e. Peter Green), worked hard, and was extremely resourceful (I loved the chapter on the cement mixer contraption he worked with that almost killed him).

Brian candidly tells of the mistakes made both in the surf and on land, how he survived, loved, forgave (not sure about Nat, ha!), and pushed on thru. And what I can tell - he's honest and tell it like it is (was). Brian did the right thing for his grandkids by leaving out some of the sketchier details, R rated, but not X!

Don't miss this trip Down Under. A must read for any surfer craving to let go and live.
This is one of those books you can re-read many times over, like a good movie. The story pulls you in and allows you to feel like you're there, but maybe it's because I wish I had had done something just like this when I was the Brian's age. Great read - great pics to go along with it!!!!
excellent read!
